Sydney Baker
Brick by brick
The red brick was always there
On my way to nursery
Keeping my little feet at bay
As I would kick it walking past
My mum would always tell me to stop
I only understood the day I stubbed my toe
The wall was always there
On my way up the road
Holding up the metal fence
As cars would drive past
My mum would stop my kicks
I began to let it do its job
The cement began to crumble
I watched it on my way
Crumbs falling off
As time went on
I walked beside my mum
Sad it's bones we're breaking
Soon enough I found
The builders came to fix it
Because it's job was to be strong
A new wall was built
On my way to school
Piece by piece
Brick by brick
Alone
I layered them up
The wall has stayed there
On my way forward
Keeping me from falling
As others kick it walking past
Alone
I fortified my wall
The cement never crumbles
On my way through time
The builders walk past
As time goes on
I walk alone
Waiting for it to break
Soon enough I found
No one would break or fix it
Because my job is to be strong
I can't be broken
Even if I crumbles on my way
For now I have no choice
As I cover my scrapes and bruises
Alone
I continue to hide my breaks
I'm tired of standing
Taking kicks from others on their way
Cracks and cries ignored
As I'm praised for my strength
Alone
I understand
Soon enough I find
The day I stubbed my toe
I should have let myself fall
I should have kicked my wall down
on my way
not a single brick unbroken
until there was nothing left
Surrounded by love
I could have fallen
But I didn't.
Soon enough I found
Myself wondering
If only I had done it
Let my wall

And now I have no choice
But to stand
To stay.
